Being the accused, I groan. Another quote from the Dies Irae. What a lack of human dignity, trying to please a wrathful tyrant-god! But also: what a deep, deep fear. Medieval people knew what torture and pain were - they saw it regularly on market-squares - and they knew it ended, luckily, with bodily death. But not in Hell, where the torture would be eternal and death could not be a relief anymore. The more I think about it, and that is the reason of this series : reveiling hidden shadows, the more I get disgusted by the sickening cruelty.
Luckily, there have also been mystics and a lot of beautiful art, and I prefer to focus on those.
