LES NUITS D'ÉTÉ

pen and watercolour on paper
2001 - 150 x 240 mm

I love Berlioz' music. To me he was the first Gothic composer. And he did create a song cycle (opus 7) called 'Les Nuits d'été'. But my work here is not influenced by his music. The musical inspiration behind this one are the Nocturnes by Gabriel Fauré. Chopin's nocturnes are gloomy and even a bit oppressive; Fauré's radiate the warmth and intimacy of a Mediterranean late evening, spent with friends and a few bottles of wine. This is a very warm work.
