RETRAITE (QUE JE PUISSE VOIR, VOIR CE QUI EST)

etching on copper, printed with chine collé
1984 - 235 x 171 mm

An etching I created in Paris whilst working at René Tazé's studio.
I met several of the artists who worked with him, people like Philippe Mohlitz, Erik Desmaziès, Yves Doaré, Gée;rard Trignac,... . each having their own character. I went to openings at the 'B' galleries: Michèle Broutta, Biren, Berrier,... .
One day a special visitor came: Jean-Pierre Velly, a French artist who lived near Rome and who was to tragically drown a few years later. René stopped working and the three of us went outside to sit in the sun and drink some beers together. Whilst talking, Jean-Pierre and me discovered we both used the same mordant. He was delighted to finally meet someone who also preferred it and we exchanged several personal tricks. I learned a lot from that conversation as Jean-Pierre was a real Master. And my French was already sufficient to have a conversation with someone.
René smiled the silent smile of the wise.
