PORTE OUVERTE À UN DÉDOUBLEMENT INATTENDU

etching on copper, printed with chine collé
1984 - 124 x 168 mm

Another one of the Tazé etchings. René made me print one copy of each and then he put this copies aside, smiling. From then on, I became an apprentice. I printed lots of non-delicate works, mostly for tourists and for banquets of the rich. I gave all I could, but he threw away more than 80% of my production of the first day, and so on, with each print telling me why it wasn't good enough. After a week or so, it reduced to some 50%. The prints had to be identical. It was boring, and not really encouraging, but I stuck to it. I also had to do many other little jobs, like going out to buy food - we ate together at midday - so as to get more comfortable with speaking French. And we drank Lapsang Souchong tea.
He really taught me to be more disciplined and go for the highest quality. This has had a lasting influence on my life.
