ESSAI DE COMMUNICATION SANS SYSTÈME DE DÉFENSE

etching on copper, printed with chine collé
1984 - 144 x 199 mm

This title comes from one of the slogans that were used in the May revolution in 1968 : C'était une nuit, celle des barricades, une nuit rouge ou verte ou noire , literally : it was a night, the night of the barricades, a night that was red, or green, or black... Taking into account that a sleepless night in French is a white night, une nuit blanche , this shows the playful creativity of Imagination au pouvoir.

It was also influenced by me visiting the Cimetière du Père-Lachaise where the 19th C. Communards had been executed...Yet, as nearly always with my works: the title only came afterwards and I did not consciously want to portray any kind of rebellion or revolution. My mother for example called this one Janneke Maan, meaning John the Moon, the Flemish name for the Moon (which is indeed male in Flemish) and indeed I can easily see why she saw the Moon in here.
