VILLES ENGLOUTIES - SUNKEN CITIES

The “Sunken Cities” series started in La Gacilly, Morbihan, when Hervé Glot suggested it as the theme of next year’s exhibition.

The idea was that a number of chosen artists would show one or two works they had created on this theme without explicitly limiting themselves to the obvious Ker Ys, the legendary sunken city of Bretagne.I found it an exciting idea and when back in my studio, I jumped right unto it and created the first work in the series, which I also showed at the exhibition. But from the very start it became clear that the theme was far from exhausted, soI continued untill I had created the complete cycle of ten works, the last one having the subtitle “The City Resurfaced”.

I’ll be forever indebted to Hervé for bringing up this theme as he opened the door to a dream for me, a dream of happiness and rapture as I have always dreamed of a city on the bottom of the ocean, be it Ys or Atlant-Ys.
